FIRST PLACE

This handcarved, double-faced, 26 x 30-in., mahogany sign for a Youngstown, NY, restaurant features three coats of Jay Cooke’s Primer, three topcoats of 1-Shot bulletin enamels and 23½k goldleaf from Sepp Leaf Products. The scroll was handcarved and handcast with Smooth-On moldmaking materials. Old Dutchman Wrought Iron fabricated the Lestingi-designed scroll bracket in aluminum.

SECOND PLACE (TIE)

Andrew Trunfio used Gerber Omega and CorelDraw! software to design this sign for a Breckinridge, CO, toy store. A routed, aluminum bracket supports the sandblasted and carved Sign Arts Product’s Sign•Foam HDU face. The sign measures 50 in. high x 36 in. wide.

SECOND PLACE (TIE)

The Teddy’s Bakery panel is a 16-ft.-long piece of CMI’s Extira exterior-grade treated panel. The ¾-in. Extira letters were painted with 1-Shot lettering enamels. The coffee cup was handcarved from 2-in.-thick, 18-lb. Sign•Foam HDU (as was the circle around the coffee cup), held together with Gorilla Glue and painted with 1-Shot lettering enamels. The entire sign was primed with Jay Cooke’s Primer. Peter Payne assisted with the gilding. Installation involved a custom bracket that fit around the original stainedglass window that the sign now covers. Also assisting with fabrication were Amos Werner, Alfie Machado, Josh Brenneman and Downey.

THIRD PLACE (TIE)

Constructed entirely of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), this sign also features PVC lenses cut with a Gerber Sabre 408 router. The lenses’ digital-print overlay was printed on a Mimaki JV3-160SP solvent-based printer, while the glasses were painted with gold atthews paint. Gerber’s ART Path software created the letters’ prismatic effects. The custom, aluminum frame is protected by Rust-Oleum® epoxy shield.

THIRD PLACE (TIE)

This converted church needed a double-faced, flag-mounted building sign to complement the existing wrought-iron railings and stainedglass windows. The 4-ft., 3-in. x 5-ft. sign was designed with Gerber Omega 2.0 software, and the individual letters, which comprise Alcan’s 4mm Dibond material, were routed on a Gerber AR600 router. These letters feature concealed stud mounting that projects off the background by ½ in., but the center photo is recessed 1½ in. to create dimension. All digital graphics were printed on 3M Controltac vinyl using Oce’s Arizona 180 large-format printer and 3M inks.
