I’VE TALKED BEFORE about delegation (see ST, July 2025 ), but I think for some of us, it is the most difficult and yet most powerful skill we can develop! Let’s talk about your 2026 delegation efforts and I’ll offer you a few tips to help you keep delegation top of mind and keep building muscle.
Why Does Delegation Matter?
- Delegation unlocks many new levels of performance in your company or department.
- You will help your team develop as leaders themselves and feel like they matter in the company.
- You will free yourself up to do the things only a leader can do.
- You will develop systems and processes to help onboard and develop team members faster than ever.
- You will build a company that scales, and does so faster than without delegating.
It requires a leap of faith, a lot of coaching and a willingness for mistakes to happen in the learning process, but the results far, far outweigh those short-term costs!
Here Are Your Top Five Delegation Tips for 2026:
- Be Clear. Don’t keep delegation a secret or try to “make it happen” without talking about it. Set the tone, seek agreement and understanding of what you expect, and be specific about the results you want. If it gets done the wrong way, revisit how you are communicating and seek to be clearer.
- Reward the Try. Sometimes people fail or drop the ball. This doesn’t automatically mean delegation is a mistake. Revisit what happened: coach, train, hold accountable — those are three different techniques, so use each of them with intent. But most importantly, notice when your team is trying to meet expectations and reward them with positive praise, and maybe coach with a small adjustment. If you don’t notice when they try, they may be less willing to try again or to try harder!
- Get Out of the Way. Often we have to step way back from a process to let the team fill the gap. You may tell them you are delegating, but if you don’t really get out of the way, they will struggle to take control. Like a backseat driver who reaches up and keeps one hand on the wheel “to be safe,” you are preventing them from fully taking the wheel.
- Use Your New Time. If you don’t redirect your time and energy into something new, you will inevitably fall back into the old work you delegated away. Design a way to be sure the new work is taking precedent. Set up a time-block schedule, create goals related to the new work, and remind yourself often that this new work you are doing is important to the total company results. I find getting out of the office does the trick. Go away for a day, a week — a month!
- Be Impatient and Patient. Don’t be too patient about what you are seeing in terms of ownership with your team! Also be impatient if they haven’t grasped the task (re-train, coach, accountability). Be patient while the process unfolds and you see results. Monitor, evaluate and try again if needed. You’ll get it done eventually!
Use these five tips to help your 2026 set you up for a new daily reality. If you practice your delegation skills this year, by 2027 you will have set into motion new initiatives, new leadership and some well-earned breathing room!
