JUSTIN GREEN’S SIGN GAME” was a regular feature in ST from 1986-2006, this one appearing in the April 2002 issue. The famous signpainter-cartoonist often made subjects of historical figures and places as he did here, depicting post-WWII downtown Cincinnati. Always fun, Green’s panels were also meticulously detailed — look closely at each hour of the Kahn’s “meat clock.” Readers could always count on a smile or a laugh from the “Sign Game.” See complete issues of Signs of the Times from 1906 to 1923 at signsofthetimes.com/archive.

  • Artist & Artisan
Justin Green passed away in 2022 at age 76. As an artist, he was very much of his times. As a sign artisan, alas, he was born too late. An old-school signpainter whose career coincided with the development of vinyl signage, many episodes of his comic — which were collected into a book — channeled his frustration, gripes and criticism into works of art.
