Royal Cricketers Arms

Parkes dressed up a boutique hotel with this handcarved-HDU pole sign. He designed the template using Rhino 4.0 3-D-design software and decorated the sign with 23k goldleaf and exterior-grade, latex paint. According to Parkes, the stitching on the cricket ball provided the sign’s most significant challenge for the 3.5 x 4-ft. signface. He also offered an interesting take on his signage niche Down Under: “Dimensional signage has only really existed here for a decade or so. Only three companies really devote their energy full-time to carved signage. [Editor’s Note: One of the other companies he noted, Danthonia Designs, also earned recognition in this contest.] I think there’s tremendous growth opportunity as companies look for options besides digital prints and flat, painted signage.”

From a base panel that resembles a barn door, to a stylized, partly shucked corn ear, to the color scheme and typestyle, this sign nails the desired aesthetic nicely. The Stoner team fabricated the 3 x 8-ft. sign on 1-in.-thick Duna HDU and ½-in.-thick Foam Visions Barn Board textured urethane. They also fashioned the raised lettering of varied thicknesses from layers of Chemcast acrylic, Kommerling Komatex® PVC and Duna HDU. The signposts comprise steel and hand-sculpted concrete.

Checklist of bayside activities: fish, boat, swim, replace fillings. Wildrose produced this 4 x 8-ft., double-sided, DesignBoard HDU sign through a process of chiseling, carving and routing by hand. Fabricators built the tooth with layers of laminated HDU and West Systems epoxy. Wilson and Zschogner created the letters with a scroll saw, and 23k goldleaf amplifies the sign’s primary text.
