Few office parks can boast such a stately entry monument as Cosner Corner on Spotsylvania Parkway in Fredericksburg, VA. The 20 x 12-ft. sign features a recycled-aluminum and copper display with bowed cabinets and flat, cut-out letters silhouetted from an underneath, frosted-acrylic face illuminated with SloanLED V Series LEDs. The shop shaped the leaves with a Gerber Sabre 408 CNC router and bent them by hand while twisting and scoring grinding swirls with texture patterns. The copper was treated with chemical etchings and Akzo Nobel’s Grip-Gard exterior-polyurethane clearcoats to create its patina. Ad-Vice decorated the rest of the sign with Matthews metallic and non-metallic, acrylic-polyurethane paint.
Goodwin said, “The sculpture is intended to be a living piece of art, with varied degrees of weathering over time. The client asked us to create something as different from a ‘plastic box on a metal stick’ as possible. They were very pleased.”

Widely known for its vehicle and building wraps, bluemedia shows its versatility with this novel cabinet sign, which Beard designed using CorelDraw®. The shop fabricated the sign by sculpting lath mesh and coating it with fiberglass to create the finish. The double-sided monument was illuminated internally by GE LEDs, which are encased with 3/16-in.-thick Lexan® polycarbonate sheets. The faces’ graphics were made from black-vinyl overlays, and the doors were built from molded door skins, cut to size from fiberglass resin, and installed within an aluminum frame. Halogen uplighting emphasizes the elements.

Quantico, VA may be best known as the U.S. Marine Corps’ and FBI headquarters, but attractive monument signs such as these bolster the bottom line of other enterprises that contribute to the local economy. Goodwin developed a sculptural interpretation of the famed Iwo Jima flag picture. He said, “We think the sculptural elements are more interesting and culturally significant than a ‘chunk of architecture’ placed at the entrance.”

The sign features scored, polished aluminum; hand-cut and rolled copper; rolled and formed aluminum; and flat brass. Concealed, integral T8 fluorescent uplighting highlights the sculpture.
