Project Description
One of my very good customers Bill Pankiw asked me to replace an old sign panel at his family’s summer cottage in Michigan. The original was old and in extremely poor condition. We had discussed numerous times (years) about making a new sign.

The design followed the original concept. It’s a tribute to his wife’s parents. Her father’s favorite things were eagles and sunsets, his favorite saying was “Keep on Keepin’ On.” Her mother loved swans and sunsets. The pair of swans represented the both of them.

The substrate is Sign Foam. I hand cut the perimeter and masked with a machine cut sandblast mask. I used a Grain Fraim for the blasting.

I sculpted the eagle and swans out of clay and made silicone molds. I then cast them in fiberglass. After a lot of sanding and finishing I airbrushed them and handpainted the details. I painted the swans pearl white and rendered some cool blue shadows to create a more interesting visual. Same with the eagle using different colors.

All the raised elements, letters, ribbon banner and frame around the eagle is router cut Sintra. Everything is sprayed with One Shot. I always catalyze my One Shot. It dries (and cures) quicker and to a durable rock-hard finish.

I finished the background in latex, doing a dry brush on the eagle side to add some visual interest versus just a one-color paint job. Outer borders are hand brushed One Shot. I sprayed everything with SEM flat clear; it really evens everything out, especially knocking the gloss off the One Shot elements.

The background behind the eagle and swans are handpainted and airbrushed with One Shot, again finished in flat clear. I adhered them to the background with some carefully planned out Gorilla Glue. They are NOT coming off.
