Event Connections/Burger King

Seeking to diversify its branding beyond the Whopper®, Burger King and its partner vendor, Event Connections, planned a 30-van, nationwide fleet campaign to tout such new items as smoothies, salads and tortilla wraps. Wunderman Advertising composed the colorful artwork and submitted it to the shop as vector art, which FastSigns fine-tuned with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

The shop produced the 17-wrap fleet (another provider in Ohio handled an additional 13) on its HP Scitex XL1500 solvent-ink printer with 3M’s Controltac air-release media. After having prepped the surface with Klean Strip denatured alcohol and 3M’s Primer 94 adhesion-promoting body filler, shop installer Thanh Pham placed the wraps, which each measure 560 sq. ft., with 50-in.-tall, seamed vertical panels. To install these wraps over the course of four days, he finessed the material, which is protected by 3M’s 8518 glossy topcoat, with 3M Gold nylon and Kapco “half-moon” felt squeegees and a Benz-O-Matic hose torch to apply the film. 3M’s Roller L and G Force Products’ RollePro media rollers helped smooth the media into place.

Dairy Council of Arizona

People probably associate a dairy farm with Arizona about as readily as they would associate a towering saguaro cactus with Wisconsin. Thus, the Dairy Council wanted to build recognition with colorful wraps that reflect local vegetation while associating it with moo juice. Backus and Jones developed the program with Adobe Creative Suite 5. The shop printed the wrap on its HP Scitex LX 800 latex-ink printer (Prenovost said the shop prefers latex-ink printing. The lack of out-gassing solvents prevents the material from becoming gummy, and the panels are ready to laminate straight off the printer) with 3M Controltac air-release media, and the shop’s 3M- and PDAA-certified installers completed the project as six, ½-in.-overlapped panels, with Lidco Teflon squeegees and Benz-O-Matic torches. Applied on a Ledco pressure laminator, 3M’s 8518 glossy overlaminate will help the wrap remain a moo-ving experience for years to come.

The Chicago Zoological Society wanted its “outreach” van, a Toyota Sienna that transports staff to meetings and educational events, to reflect the Brookfield Zoo’s mission of immersive learning (and fun). Murashige’s lively design reflects the institution’s diverse flora and fauna, with an emphasis on a child’s sense of wonder and curiosity. Vernon and Maz printed the wrap on its EFI-VUTEk Ultra Vu II 150 SC solvent-ink printer with Oracal USA’s OraJet 3951 wrapping film with CommandForm® air-release technology. To decorate the windows, Vernon and Maz used Solvex perforated window film. The wrap’s side panels were installed with a 1-in. overlap; the hood, rear and bumper panels were installed seamlessly. The shop applied Oracal’s ORAGUARD 290 cast laminate with a GBC Orca III laminator, and installed the job with Geek Wraps’ soft-edged squeegees.
