Biovation Acquisition Co. (Montgomery, MN) is debuting BioSurf®, a corn-based, printable material designed as a wallcovering-media alternative to high- and low-pressure-laminate (HPL, LPL) graphics. The company offers the material in 2-D, rigid and 3-D, formable varieties; the 2-D material may be bonded to boards or drywall, and the 3-D substrate may be thermally softened to mold around any contour. BioSurf contains three layers: a base, polylactic acid level that’s extracted from biomass material and extruded to 5-50 mils, a high-definition, printed tier, and a transparent, wear-resistant sheet. According to the company, BioSurf’s composition yields a high-definition, scratch-resistant image that’s void of such materials as formaldehyde, melamine using vacuum or membrane-press technology. The 2-D material contains a traditional or low-solvent adhesive, and a base, kraft-paper layer.
