Dating back to 1957, Chicago’s Foremost Liquors sign was recently taken down, according to the Instagram site Chicago Sign Museum. “The last reminder of the former Argyle St. of decades ago,” reads a portion of their post, “it’s seen the neighborhood change over the past 70 years, from being a theater district to the Appalachian migration that was known as ‘Hillbilly Heaven’ to a predominantly Vietnamese community that we still know and celebrate today.”

A family currently owning this location was forced to move across the street after 55 years of residence there, according to Chicago Sign Museum. “We tried for weeks to facilitate the relocation of the sign, calling city officials and working with the owners who also care very much about the sign. In the end a private out of town buyer bought the sign,” reads another portion of their post.

Paldo Sign Co. (River Grove, IL) performed the takedown.
