Installer Woes

  • I continue to scratch my head when dealing with sign installers. I asked a guy what it would cost to apply a 4 x 8 digital print that we shipped to him on a panel and install it on two 4 x 4s. Thinking out loud to me he says, “Well, two 10-in. 4 x 4s are about $19 bucks a piece etc.” I’m thinking to myself, “And who pays for your gas and time to go pick them up?” He was the same with all materials. I hired him, he did a good job, but left at least $100 on the table by not marking up materials. An in-depth article on sound practices for sign manufacturing and installation would help small startup sign guys and also stop some of the crazy cheap bids that seem to be always floating around. — John Miller, Signs by Autografix, Branford, CT
