Georgia On My Mind

As a 1994 graduate of the University of Georgia (UGA), I fondly remember my days (well, I remember most of them) as a fun-loving undergrad. Although what I learned in lectures, labs and textbooks was important, life experience was the most enriching part of my higher education. I returned to my old stomping ground in September to soak in the atmosphere and watch the UGA Bulldogs take on the University of Arkansas Razorbacks.

Before I entered the world of marriage and fatherhood, visits to Athens were an annual occurrence. Back then, I would bemoan the absence of a former favorite. But, as I’ve grown older and accepted that things change, I’ve learned to appreciate Athens is an organically cool and kitschy place.

One aspect that enriches the city’s ambience is its signage. Colorful window graphics have always been ubiquitous, but bracket-mounted, projecting signs have seemingly mushroomed. Perhaps sign codes have been modified to allow signage, or such signs represent a viable loophole in otherwise restrictive regulations.

That said, enjoy this gallery of my trip through the Classic City (some pictures from Atlanta are also included for good measure). Don’t be surprised if you develop a sudden hankering for boiled peanuts, barbecue and The Allman Brothers.
