After a fervent response from the local community, AMC Theaters announced that it will renovate – but not replace – a beloved sign affixed atop the 81-year-old Uptown Theater in Washington, DC’s Cleveland Park neighborhood. The theater chain originally aspired to replace the 22-ft.-wide, red neon “UPTOWN” sign, but according to WAMU.org, AMC changed its tune after locals rallied in support of the sign. Instead, the sign’s lighting will be retrofitted with LEDs for improved energy efficiency.
