The following obituary was sent to Signs of the Times by Art Diamond of the Diamond Research Corp. (Ojai, CA).

On March 10, 2011 we bid a sad farewell to Tom Reid, a dear friend and valued associate. Born October 15, 1953 in Gainesville, Georgia, Tom passed peacefully after a sudden, brief bout with pancreatic cancer. He leaves behind his beloved wife Becky, his Mom, Ms. Mamie Reid, his son Patrick, his younger brother Darrell, step-daughters Melissa and Christy, and step-son Scott.

Apart from leaving us at the young age of 57, the tragedy of Tom’s passing is that he finally found Becky, the love of his live, and had settled into a new home in beautiful Westlake Village, California to enjoy a life of peace and happiness. A dream long sought, but once found, so quickly lost.

Tom Reid began his career in the self-adhesive label industry with companies such as, Avery and Mactac. He later served as President and CEO of Sihl USA, the North American operating company of papermaker Sihl AG of Zurich, Switzerland. His duties in that position included managing and directing Sihl’s North American operations in San Jose, California and Binghamton, New York.

Until his passing, Reid divided his time between his responsibilities as Executive Vice President at Catalina Graphic Films in Calabasas Hills, and with his consulting firm, Coated Solutions, in Westlake Village. As President of Coated Solutions, Tom performed insightful market research studies and delivered vital consulting services to the paper industry. He held various sales, marketing and corporate management positions throughout the years, giving him a broad perspective and understanding of these markets and their evolution into the current digital world.

He was well known throughout the imaging industry for his keen management and administrative skills, always performing with integrity. Tom Reid had a knack for rapidly analyzing complex management issues and proposing clever, often innovative, solutions. His close friends knew him as a man with a positive attitude and a warm heart. A friend of Tom had a friend for life.

With his good buddy Chuck Sharp of Digital Image Technology, Tom frequented the vintage automobile races at the Laguna Seca raceway in Monterey, California.

For all who knew him, Tom was a dear and reliable friend, always true to his word and always fair in business dealings. His sudden departure comes as a shock to us all. It brings great sorrow to friends and family alike.
