8 On SEPTEMBER 8 we celebrate National Ampersand Day. Sign pros have long valued “&” as a way to save space & add interest. “&” is a typographical ligature of the Latin word “et,” which means “and.” As Michael Caine is supposed to have said, “Not a lot of people know that.”

13 National Peanut Day is being held SEPTEMBER 13 because, let’s face it, peanuts have had a tough time these past decades. Banned from flights and school lunch rooms — for good reason, don’t get me wrong — but Mr. Peanut, you are still a class act. I tip my hat and monocle to you.

21 On the third Saturday of the month, SEPTEMBER 21, National Cleanup Day encourages all of us to take action to make the country a cleaner, better place to live. If your office or shop can’t wait till spring and is closed on the weekend, do your spruce up the day before.

24 National Punctuation Day on SEPTEMBER 24 puts a period on our calendar so to speak. Or an exclamation point! On this day I’ll reflect that when I started in business 36 years ago only children used them in writing. Now if I don’t, I fear I’m not showing enough enthusiasm!
