Semplicemente Bello (Simply Beautiful)

A simple sign in rural Italy provides inspiration.

Unquestionably, the sign industry undergoes significant change almost daily. As the industry transitions to inkjet-printed graphics and electronic-digital signage, the market for handcrafted signage has waned and may ultimately face extinction. However, their lack of ubiquity gives a homespun sign a distinct aura of authenticity.

Jan Lorenc, co-principal of Lorenc + Yoo Design (Roswell, GA), photographed this sign while visiting Sirmione, Italy, a small town between Milan and Bologna near the shores of Lake Garda. It directs the reader to the nearest tavern (osteria), restaurant and garden. Proof positive that wayfinding need not be expensive to be effective.

Lorenc said, “I hope the day of these homemade signs hasn’t totally given way to computer-generated lettering. The personality in these types of signs is amazing and refreshing.”
