Your new contractor’s license is displayed proudly next to your sales counter. It wasn’t easy, but now you have the credentials to pull local sign permits and provide installation and service to your customers. In fact, you’ve already received some jobs that include installations. Before sending out your crew, however, it’s important to know the basics of personnel, equipment and project management.

Shop owners who dive into contracting with no previous experience typically make expensive mistakes. Sometimes the errors are so severe that they discourage people from pursuing the full-service route. A few years ago, a vinyl shop owner told me the story of how a $500 banner job turned into a $5,000 debt. The customer wanted a temporary banner installed to cover an existing channel-letter sign on his building facade. The installer apparently was not aware that the channel letter sign was to be reused, and he fastened the banner directly to the plastic channel-letter faces with sheet-metal screws
