Exploration

TO COMPLEMENT OUR theme of exploring the sign industry, we asked a handful of questions about exploring the world. Europe is both the place most would like to see as well as being the most interesting place already visited. Favorite explorers include some interesting choices.

VINLAND. Among those mostly winging it, one man, 40-49 years old, wants most to explore North America, much like his favorite explorer Lief Erikson.

36. In what part of the world would you most like to explore?

IS IT EVEN GREEN? Of the 4 selecting Greenland, one is under 30 years old, one is 40-49, one is 50-59, and one is over 70 — perhaps to see for themselves what all the hubbub is about.

37. Which part of the world that you have already explored has been the most interesting?

Europe got 16 mentions — by far the most. Alaska and the Caribbean received 5 each. Asia, Costa Rica and Hawaii got 3 each. Many individual countries or regions were named. “Anywhere I go, I learn and admire the surroundings,” writes one respondent, while another claims “Literally Chicago.” I hear Gary, IN is nice!

38. Who is your favorite historical or fictional explorer and why in one sentence?

Indiana Jones, Lewis and Clark, and Marco Polo all received 4 mentions; Captain Cook, Jacques Cousteau and Jesus each followed with 3. Amelia Earhart, Daniel Boone, Ernest Shackleton and John Muir make up the others with multiple mentions. Most clever: Frodo because “he didn’t want to leave but once he did, it was an amazing world.” Cutest: a tie between Moana and Carmen Sandiego. Strangest: Alice in Wonderland.
