IT’S 2021 AND you’re trying to figure out how to get some new clients, but you don’t want to spring for new equipment. Have you thought about providing window displays or floor graphics — or even wallpaper? If you have a wide-format digital printer, then you may be able to easily provide new products merely by purchasing some new media. So, let’s look at some solutions that may appeal to established customers and also help you find new ones.

Just about every storefront is covered in glass. Where do you think the term ‘window shopping’ comes from? Several solutions address windows, depending on the customer’s needs. The traditional product is a design printed in reverse on a clear, static-cling vinyl. The customer can place the graphic where needed and the view into the store is not inhibited. Removal is also easy, as no residue is left when the design is removed. These signs typically last for three months or so. If you need to offer something more durable, then use a clear, water-based adhesive media. These are not repositionable, but they will last 3-4 years. The media is easy to remove and water cleans up any residual adhesive. Another popular solution is perforated, see-through window media. With this, an image is printed on one side; the image appears opaque on one side, but one the other is transparent. This media is also used on vehicle windows.

The pandemic’s effect of social distancing generated a surge in demand in floor graphics, otherwise used to describe a product, service or information. Of course, the application must stand up to being walked over, and also must be textured to prevent slips. Several companies offer this media, some of which can even adhere to carpet. In many cases an overlaminate is not needed, as the media has an appropriate texture already. Longevity varies, but generally look for 3-4 months.

Floor media can be used to describe a product or service, or to convey information, and typically last for 3-4 months. However, the application must be textured to avoid slips.

Wall coverings have become a growing market for digital printers. We tend to think of wallpaper and you can, in fact, get specific media for custom wallpaper. How about outdoors, as well? Some media types can adhere to the rough surfaces on many buildings. These also work well for custom murals — you know, like Hawaiian beach scenes covering the wall of a travel agency. These and more most likely can be printed with your existing equipment.

As you’ve just read, you can fairly easily boost your bottom line using your present equipment by offering custom window, floor and/or wall coverings. All you really need to add is the right media for the job.
