Signs, Stories and So Long

Paula’s parting thoughts on marketing signs.

THERE’S A SIGNSHOP I once visited that had a plaque near the exit door. It read: “A good sign gets you noticed. A great sign gets remembered.”

That’s always stuck with me — not just as a marketing mantra, but as a kind of life philosophy. Whether we’re talking about signs, business relationships or columns like this one, the goal isn’t just to be seen. It’s to be remembered.

This is my final column for Signs of the Times, and I wanted to use this space to say a few parting words — not just about marketing, but about meaning.

Every Business Is a Story

If there’s a common thread in everything I’ve written here, it’s this: Your shop is more than what you sell. It’s who you help. It’s how you solve problems. It’s the pride in your team, the care in your process, the fingerprints you leave on your town — sometimes literally, with window vinyl.

And great marketing is just storytelling. Not storytelling in the sense of fairytales and fluff, but in the sense of connecting. Showing the world what you’re made of. Giving potential customers a reason to believe in you before they ever pick up the phone.

What I’ve Loved About Writing These Columns

I’ve loved the chance to speak directly to other owners, operators and marketers in this gritty, creative, relentless industry. To offer some ideas, challenge some habits and hopefully help you get a few more eyeballs — and a few more phone calls.

I’ve also loved hearing from readers. Whether you emailed, messaged or just came up to me at a tradeshow to say, “Hey, I liked that one,” — thank you. It meant the world.

Keep Doing What You Do

As I wrap up this series, my hope is that you keep showing up boldly and consistently in your marketing. Not just with the right photos or keywords or tools (though those matter). But with your personality. Your clarity. Your heart.

That’s what builds loyalty. That’s what gets remembered.
