Signs of the Times is proud to announce that we have reached 10,000 followers on our Facebook page. All credit for building up the following is due to ST Studio Content Manager Jeff Russ, who had also served as ST art director for more than 20 years. ST Assistant Editor Mildred Nguyen makes the Tuesday and Thursday editorial posts.

“When I started this page on Feb 23, 2010, I just wanted a place to showcase some of the beautiful sign photos that we weren’t able to feature in the print edition or the website,” Jeff says. “I also figured that the casual nature of FB would allow us to post the funny or weird side of the sign industry. Although we are advocates for great signs, I wanted a place to show some duds too, a throwback to our Ugly Sign Contest.”

The goal was for the ST FB page to be a place where we could have fun with signs in a way that wasn’t appropriate for our other platforms, Jeff explains. “It’s also great to get likes and comments in real time. Also, social media magic happens occasionally, and we post a sign photo and then hear from the installer, fabricator or designer who shares interesting stories about ‘their’ sign.”

Our first post was a music video: appropriately, the band Evanescence singing their hit “Bring Me to Life” in the Las Vegas Neon Boneyard. Jeff thought it was a fun nod to MTV launching their channel with The Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star.”

Since then, we’ve posted interesting sign-related content nearly every day. Currently, we post six times per week. “Sometimes a post I think will do well languishes, but every so often a post will go viral,” Jeff says. “We’ve had many posts take off and have over 100K views, likes and shares.”

Jeff is quick to point out we are already at 10,010 followers as of this story’s posting.

“The sign industry is a unique group, and I’m glad we have the ability to serve up the quirky and lighthearted content that reflects the creativity and wit of the people that work in the sign business every day,” Jeff says.
