SmartWork Media (Montclair, NJ) has announced Mark Kissling as the new editor-in-chief of Signs of the Times, the sign industry’s leading resource since 1906. Also, Grant Freking has been elevated to managing editor. Kissling had previously served as managing editor since 2016, and replaces Robin Donovan in his new role. Freking had served as associate editor since 2017.

“I am both honored to have been entrusted to carry on the tradition of excellence for the sign industry’s publication of record, and also excited to lead it into the future,” Kissling said. “Under the guidance of SmartWork Media, I can’t wait to share with our readers and advertising supporters all of the new, fresh and fun improvements coming to Signs of the Times, starting very soon online and in print with our April issue.”

“We would like to congratulate Mark Kissling and Grant Freking. Mark and Grant have stepped into their respective roles seamlessly during the integration of Signs of the Times into SmartWork Media,” said Matthijs Braakman, publisher of SmartWork Media. “We’re grateful to them for their professionalism and teamwork in keeping this iconic publication running as strongly as ever. Signs is in good hands and ready to evolve in 2021 to be a stronger integrated media brand under their leadership.”

“We’re excited to have Mark and Grant leading this historic brand forward,” said David Squires, group editorial director of SmartWork Media. “Both are experienced, dedicated journalists with a deep knowledge of the sign industry and we’re thrilled to be working with them to lift our print and online coverage to new heights in 2021.”

Victor Cantal, a veteran of SmartWork Media who joined Signs of the Times in December 2020, rounds out the editorial staff as art director.
