Ultimaker, Univ. of Illinois Develop Online 3-D-Printer Training Courses

Sessions explore printers’ mechanics, design software

Ultimaker, a manufacturer of desktop 3-D printers, the Univ. of Illinois and Coursera, an online-education platform, have collaborated to develop four online courses that address the fundamentals of 3-D printing. The courses will include an overview of 3-D printing and its potential; an examination of applications across various industries; a thorough review of 3-D-design software; and an explanation of how 3-D printers are made and how they operate. The course culminates with a "capstone" project, which will allow a hands-on opportunity to apply the principles to 3-D printing.

To further this educational initiative, Ultimaker outfitted the Illinois MakerLab at the Univ. of Illinois’ College of Business, reportedly the world’s first 3-D printing lab within a business school, with 17 3-D printers to further research on the technology.
