Avery Dennison’s Graphics and Reflective-Products Division (Painesville, OH) is announcing the winners of its Design 66 Challenge. Working with Rusty Wallace Racing, which owns Steve Wallace’s #66 stock car that races on NASCAR”s Nationwide Series racing circuit, and 5-Hour Energy, the energy-drink maker that serves as the team’s sponsor, Avery solicited racecar-wrap graphics, with the winner being selected to wrap Wallace’s car for the season’s final race in Homestead, FL in November using Avery’s MPI 1005 Supercast Easy Apply RS air-egress media. Contestants submitted more than 120 entries to Avery’s dedicated website, www.supercastmyride.com (all finalists and entries are still accessible there). Online voters selected their top 10 favorites, and officials from Rusty Wallace Racing – whose cars have been wrapped with the Supercast media throughout the season — and 5-Hour Energy selected the top three designs.
Daniel Wayne Logue, a vehicle-wrap designer for Lincoln, NE-based Express Signs, won the grand prize with his tribute to U.S. servicemen, “Salute Our Soldiers.” His work incorporates the graphic style that commonly emblazoned World War II-era fighter planes – pin-up girls, bullet holes and an open-mouthed, fanged snarl that resembles those planes’ nose art. In addition to receiving the honor of seeing his creation race around the track, Logue and a guest will watch the Homestead race from pit row and meet Wallace and Brendan Gaughan, who drives Rusty Wallace Racing’s #62 car.
Shawn Magee, a Mebane, NC-based freelance designer, took second place with his “Landshark” design that features sleek striping and a red and black color palette. He earned a racing helmet autographed by Rusty Wallace, Steve Wallace, and Brendan Gaughan, as well as a Visa giftcard and three dozen bottles of 5-Hour Energy. Logue also earned third place with his “5 Hour Power” creation, which features black, hot-rod flames against a fiery-red backdrop.
Rusty Wallace Racing will output the graphics on its Mutoh ValueJet 1614 64-in., solvent-ink printer.
