From a signage perspective, Tokyo’s Shinjuku district is unlike anything else in the world.

A good time is promised entering Tokyo’s Kabukichō district at night. The colors softly spill from the signs onto the asphalt below.

The entry sign translates to “Kabukichō First Avenue.” During the daytime this area is family-friendly, but at nighttime it transforms into a famous entertainment district better suited to adults.

Heading deeper into the Kabukichō district. Just as the streets are crowded with people, the space is packed tight with signs.

Even Tokyo’s side streets are filled with electric signs of all types.

Vintage neon facade signs demand attention, even away from the busier streets.

Every surface becomes an opportunity to advertise.

Mt. Fuji provides an elegant backdrop for Tokyo International Airport’s restrained ID sign.

By now you know this can only be a food street… Izakaya St., Shibuya District, to be exact.

Iconic illuminated lamps enhance this already well-lit side street and give it a sense of romance.

Some signs are universal.

Neither rain, nor sleet, shall keep this sign from doing its job for one of Japan’s best-known entertainment companies.

Peering up at the 70-ft. signs is all fun and games until Godzilla arrives.
