United States Sign Council (USSC) member designers submitted more than 200 commercial- and electric-sign entries for the association’s 10th annual design competition. Dan Antonelli, Graphic D-Signs (Washington, NJ); Julian Braet, Mr. J Signs (Lyndhurst, NJ); and Len Davidson, Davidson Neon Design (Philadelphia), selected 12 winners in eight categories and determined the contest’s "Best of Show" honoree.
Multi-award winner Gable Signs & Graphics (Baltimore) received first-place honors in the competition’s "Hand Carved Signs," "Internally Illuminated," "Dimensional Signs" and "Multimedia" categories, and its "The Rose Restaurant" entry was named "Best of Show." Also a multi-award winner, Manahawkin, NJ-based Typestries Sign & Design placed first in the contest’s "Vehicle Signs" and "Vinyl Decorated Signs" categories.
In addition to overall appearance, the 2002 contest winners were judged on effectiveness and originality. Plus, the design projects provide proper identification, and demonstrate an imaginative combination of materials and/or techniques.
All the winning entries — which were displayed at the USSC SignWorld USA tradeshow in Atlantic City, NJ, this past December — are also featured in the association’s 2003 Sign Design calendar.
