2022 Sign Contest: Best of Show

DESIGNED BASED ON a logo provided by Ross Johnson Design (Rapid City, SD), the robot, staircase and sign were crafted for the Sprockets Fun Foundry in Keystone, SD. Constructed in about two months and fabricated in four sections for easy transport, the 24-ft.-tall sculpture’s structural frame and staircase are composed of welded steel cut using a MultiCam Plasma cutter, while the sign face was routed from 30-Ib. Coastal Enterprises Precision Board HDU. The team hand sculpted the sign’s balance with fiberglass-reinforced concrete, employed a MultiCam 3000 series for routing, and used Miller welders and hand tools for the fabrication of the steel armature. Hand-brushed Sherwin Williams acrylic paint adds a finishing touch.
