As the recently passed U.S. House of Representatives resolution, H. Res. 298, indicates, the sign industry is perhaps, at last, earning some well deserved recognition for its economic contributions. Blue Ash, OH-based Abstract Displays, an exhibit- and tradeshow-graphic designer, received similar accolades via its nomination by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce (COC) for National Small Business of the Year.
The company first earned recognition on the local, and then earned the designation of Small Business of the Year (which the COC identifies as companies with fewer than 250 employees and gross revenue under $20 million) for the Great Lakes Region. Mike Eng, who co-owns the company with his wife, Carla, said key COC criteria include financial performance, community service and staff training and retention.
“Now more than ever, extensive product knowledge and excellent customer service are essentially to building a loyal customer base,” he said. “And, we outsource the product of our displays to vendors who understand the importance of quality and efficiency.”
The winner will be announced during America’s Small Business Summit, which takes place May 11-13 in Washington, D.C. Although the title National Small Business of the Year carries little more than pride and bragging rights for the victor, Eng said the recognition “would be a tremendous honor and testament to the quality of work and commitment of our staff.”
