Bounce LED (Marrickville, NSW, Australia) has announced artist Callum Morton’s “City Lights” project, manufactured and installed by Comcut Group (Mulgrave, NSW, Australia), as the winner of its 2022 Power to Illuminate competition, according to Bounce LED’s website. This prestigious award is given to impressive works of illumination from artists and signmakers.
The installation is an industrial artwork assembled from 44 individual ‘empty signs,’ as the website describes them. The influential Australian artist was commissioned by property developer, Golden Age, to manufacture and install the public artwork as part of the opening of Ace Hotel in Surry Hills, NSW, Australia. Using a variety of differently shaped LED-lit sign frames constructed from black powder-coated steel, the piece conveys the passing of time and random complexity of urban life.

“Empty signs, like empty shops, are frames that remind us, in an elegiac way, not just of the passing of time, but that the city is always in flux; it’s a machine that keeps moving, expanding and evolving. This work collects them all together in a dense archive, like a series of fragments,” says Morton, as quoted from Golden Age’s website.
The Power to Illuminate competition is held every other year to highlight creative concepts that demonstrate innovation and a professional application of illumination. For the award, Comcut Group are receiving transportation and accommodations for a once-in-a-lifetime getaway to Las Vegas for the 2023 ISA International Sign Expo.
