Minneapolis-based Visual Impact Signs (VIS) does more than create signage for the Metrodome – it also switches it out between University of Minnesota’s Gopher baseball and football games, and Minnesota Twins games. VIS’ Mike Cofrin described a typical fall weekend: “Saturday needs to be a Gopher football field; that includes putting up all the banners. But prior to that, the entire field interior is all Twins graphics. At midnight, we’re converting it back [to Twins banners].”

VIS is responsible for more than just banners. The stadium’s three main sports entities are featured in murals around the entrances. A Scitex Vision HP Turbojet and 3M Controltac vinyl were used for a new Twins and Vikings murals. The company worked with promotional agency Headwater Creative for the project.

Also challenging were the various signage applications that commemorated the stadium’s 25th anniversary. From placards to banners and Ultraflex wire mesh, VIS handled everything inhouse. The Metrodome’s days might be numbered, but as Cofrin paraphrased the stadium’s director of operations, they wanted to “finish with a flourish.”
