The city of Newport, KY will begin long-term structural improvements to the iconic Purple People Bridge along with installation of color-changing LED lighting, LINK nky reports.
The city voted on an agreement with Structural Systems Repair Group LLC at a special Newport Board of Commissioners meeting in March to permanently address structural damage to the bridge, which once led to nearly six months of closure in 2024. Construction is scheduled to begin April 27 and continue through August, with temporary closures blocking access at the Cincinnati approach from May 4 through June 8.
The city has also secured a $2 million appropriation in the state’s budget legislation for the installation of dynamic, color-changing LED lighting on the bridge, which will be similar to lighting on the new 4th Street Bridge.
Construction on the Cincinnati approach is scheduled to begin April 27 and continue through August. To safely complete this work, temporary closures will be required throughout the construction period. The most significant closure will block access at the Cincinnati approach from May 4 through June 8.
