LEDs Illuminate the Vatican’s Mobile Podium

Space Cannon (Fubine, Italy) has designed a lighting solution for the Vatican’s mobile podium, from which Pope Benedict XVI addresses audiences throughout Italy and in St. Peter’s Square. Lighting the stage are 196 luminaires from Space Cannon, each of which contains 10 Luxeon Rebel LEDs from Philips Lumileds (San Jose, CA).

Vatican Director of Technical Services Pier Carlo Cuscianna envisioned a podium-in-a-trailer that could be towed by a standard road vehicle, that, when opened, becomes a 10m x 10m stage. When closed, it is the size of a standard trailer that can fit underneath highway underpasses and through the Arch of Bells, a significant entrance to the Vatican City.
