IN THIS EPISODE, Eric talks to Joseph Beyer and Jordan Anderson, who wrote and directed Marqueetown, an independent documentary film about a small town theater and how a young man from Marquette, MI, where the Nordic Theatre is located, gathered forces and funds for its restoration — along with its nearly 90-year-old marquee.
Beyer and Anderson discuss the importance of iconic downtown theaters to their communities and the evidence that restored theater and signs serve to stimulate local economies. Of course, the business reasons run alongside (and perhaps below) the personal and emotional connections many members of these communities have with their local theaters and marquee signs. The memories, meeting places and experiences are universally cherished.
The filmmakers also provide considerable details about the original Nordic Theatre marquee — a modern technological wonder for 1936. At one point Joseph Beyer mentions that Poblocki Sign Co. (Milwaukee) is still in business, but in fact, the company closed in early May.
