The Opel exhibit, called “Loops,” won the 77th International Geneva Motor Show’s Creativity Award 07, thanks to GKD Metal Fabrics (headquartered in Duren, Germany, and the U.S. headquarters is in Cambridge, MD), a leading producer of woven, wire-mesh that comprises metal, synthetic wires and fibers, and ag4 media façade GmbH. Two hundred square meters of GKD’s transparent Mediamesh® architectural communication system dynamically added a wave motion. The custom mesh featured integrated SMD technology. Eighteen panels installed around the stand created a multi-dimensional media vehicle presentation space.
Created in partnership with ag4 media façade GmbH, Mediamesh combines stainless-steel wire mesh with IT-based LED technology to create permanent and integrated media-based architectural solutions. A woven cable mesh forms a mechanical interface for special, round profiles into which LEDs are inserted. These profiles are then interconnected by cables, sealed with a waterproof resin and formed into the end users’ specified width and length. Once installed, Mediamesh displays can be operated via the Internet.
The displays features a color depth of 36 bit at a frame rate of 400 Hz. Power consumption for a 2,000 sq. m façade averages 70 to 90kW/h. Mediamesh can be woven and finished in any shape or size and display images from simple graphics to video-quality output. The product is reportedly permanently weather and temperature resistant. The company says the product could be installed beneath a surface of ice and remain fully functional.
