Osram Opens Second LED Chip-Production Plant

Osram Opto Semiconductors (Regensburg, Germany) has opened a high-volume, chip-production facility in Penang, Malaysia. Having broken ground in July 2007, the company has completed the construction and process-testing phases for the 377,000-sq.-ft. production plant. Regular LED-chip production has commenced after manufacturing processes were established for the 4-in.-wafer-based indium gallium nitride (InGaN) chips.
The LED manufacturer now has high-volume, chip-production facilities in Europe and Asia. Roughly 2,600 of the company’s 4,400 worldwide workforce is at the Malaysian site. The main facility in Regensburg was expanded in 2008.
