Sign Industry Thrice Represented at Planners’ National Conference

The sign industry will be well represented at the American Planning Assn.’s 2010 National Planning Conference, to be held April 10-13, 2010 at the New Orleans Morial Convention Center. Among the exhibitors will be the United States Sign Council (USSC), the Signage Foundation, Inc. (SFI) and the Intl. Sign Assn. (ISA).

This will be USSC’s fourth consecutive year to exhibit. Its research arm, the USSC Foundation, will be providing the estimated 8,000 attendees a CD with five volumes of sign research conducted by the Penn State Transportation Institute. Data will include guidelines for sign size and height, and measurement procedures for sign illumination.

The Signage Foundation, which also has previously exhibited, will distribute CDs that include "A Framework for On-premise Sign Regulations," a model sign code written by Prof. Alan Weinstein (Cleveland State) and David B. Hartt. The model code was part of the program at last falls’s 2009 National Signage Research & Education Conference.

ISA, which has also exhibited every year since at least 2006, routinely distributes one-page documents. This year, topics will be explaining the difference between on- and off-premise electronic message centers (EMCs), how a well-drafted sign code can help townships save money on sign-code enforcement, and information about appropriate brightness/illumination levels for EMCs.
