Vehicle Graphics Contest

FIRST PLACE

Flames and vehicles collaborate as naturally as peanut butter and jelly (or nitrous oxide and street rodders). Whether ghostly, tribal or lifelike, flames convey a sense of power and independence much better than a pair of Yosemite Sam “Back off” mud flaps. Chaszeyka created the original artwork – he said it reminded him of the Batman emblem with a bit of tribal aura. He said, “The chrome-and-flames combination has recently become my trademark.”

He began his process with X-otic Colors (Minneapolis) airbrush bases and tints, which he applied with an Iwata-Medea double-action airbrush. To protect his design, he began with X-otic’s 32-200 Production Cleer clearcoat, and finished with three coats of 32-100 Cleer with wet-sanding between each coat. Chaszeyka applied the clearcoat with an Iwata-Medea HVLP gun.

SECOND PLACE

Presumably, Peter Tufts, an industrial-equipment contractor, cheered Lombardo’s handiwork with enthusiasm that equaled or exceeded that of the judges. After having used vector and clip art to create the design and GerberMask to set the pattern, he applied 1Shot® lettering enamel with rollers to create the truck’s seamless color fades. To amplify these graphics, he created airbrush highlights around the text’s edges and pinstriped the car with 1Shot® lettering enamel using a Dick Blick Eclipse #490120 00 striper and a Mack 000 sword brush.

Also hailing from the Bay State, the Peaches created appropriate vintage graphics for the customer’s Model A truck. Using a freehand-produced pattern, they mixed custom, two-tone 1Shot hues that they handpainted onto the vehicle with Grumbacher brushes. For the letters, the Peaches applied 23k goldleaf, which they accented with a spun burnish.
