In July, an Oscar Mayer Wienermobile crashed into a Mount Pleasant, WI house. A 22-year-old driver thought she had reversed the oversized vehicle when she was trying to turn it in the driveway, but instead accelerated forward into the deck and garage of the home, as if in a hurry to ketchup with something.
This topped off a tough month. The company’s retired chairman, Oscar G. Mayer died on July 6. This prompted People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals to suggest the company should consider if the vehicle cuts the mustard. Then, a Hawaii-based environment group claimed the traveling footlong violated a state law that prohibits vehicular advertising and should be kept on the mainland.
