15 Awesome Things About Being a Sign Pro

Though most of your customers are probably thankful for your craftsmanship and the effort you put forth in making their sign look great, not all of them express their gratitude.

When they do, however, it’s validation of why you go to painstaking lengths to make your clients happy. And, heck, it just feels good when someone acknowledges your talent and work ethic, right?

That’s why Instagram commenter cornbread_402 (a signmaker in Omaha, NE) enjoys hearing customers offer their commendations on a sign well done. “When they say ‘it looks better in person,’” he notes, is one of the most awesome things about being a sign pro.

In a recent Brain Squad survey, we asked you:

“What’s your absolutely favorite thing about being a sign professional?”

A theme emerged from your replies: Your job isn’t just a job – it’s a creative outlet through which you can make a positive impact on your client.

Can you add anything to the list? Feel free to comment below with your own thoughts.

1. Seeing our clients’ positive energy when they see the sign up! The whole process from conception to the finished project. – Gwen Snow, Innovative Sign Systems, Vista, CA

2. Love hand lettering when I can and the variety of jobs we get to do every day. One day I’m a painter, next day a wood worker, sheet metal and welding the next. It’s always something different. – Louis Pascuzzi, Economy Sign Co., Danbury, CT

3. Ramsay Signs is currently helping design a new sign program for a local neighborhood grocery store. It’s extremely cool to have developed a relationship and good friends to help them create a new identity. At the end of the day it’s about developing friendships and relationships.” – Joe Gibson, Ramsay Signs, Portland, OR

4. Being able to make a living in a creative field. – Peter Poanessa, Keene Signworx, Swanzey, NH

5. Every day is something different! – Melvin La Pan, Fastsigns, Augusta, GA

6. The creativity, the projects are always changing, and we really love seeing projects go from a chicken scratch to digital to physical tangible product. – Chad Lawson, Sign Pro of Skagit Valley, Mount Vernon, WA

7. Helping our clients build their brand and business. Most of our clients have taken a risk with their personal finances to build their dream business. Signage is one important factor in building that business, and it is satisfying to me to help these people realize a dream. – Stephen Russ, Ortwein Sign Co., Chattanooga, TN

8. My absolute favorite thing about being a sign professional is helping business owners grow and make more money with their well-designed commercial vehicle wraps. I watched one client (over the last seven years) grow from one vehicle to now 14 wrapped vehicles in his fleet. – Becky Duke, Sykesville, MD

9. Overcoming daily challenges of helping customers determine how we can produce their signs for them. – Vince Cvijanovic, Graphic Components, Greensboro, NC

10. It’s about as multi-disciplinary a field as you can get. – Keith Davis, KRD Design, Chester Springs, PA

11. I have been in the industry for 30 years, and my favorite thing is to embrace new technologies and products to keep us ahead of the curve. – John Johnson, A-Plus Signs, Fresno, CA

12. The flexibility – we can create ANYTHING. – Abdul Cassimjee, Stallion Signs, San Antonio, TX

13. I love that every day is different. I don’t go to work and do the same thing over and over and over again. I work on different projects. I get to meet new people. Sure, it’s doing proofs and application and ordering, but it’s not monotonous. – Meri Lindenmuth, G&L’s Sign Factory, Bethlehem, PA

14. Having several hundred bosses, i.e. customers. (If you didn’t realize, that was sarcastic.) – Rocco Gaskins, Abco Signs, Pennsauken, NJ
