2008 International Sign Contest

FIRST PLACE

Installed in Frankfurt, Germany, this branding image features rolled and machined aluminum sheet stock that matches the design’s organic curves. Jan Lorenc designed this apart from his relationship with the Lorenc + Yoo Design firm. Studio Sungshin, a 20-year-old company, specializes in art-products fabrication, including public sculptures and special structures.

SECOND PLACE

The 33-in.-tall, 29-ft.-long AMC/IMAX sign features aluminum sheeting over a rigid, steel framework. The finish is Matthews Paint’s MAP 23466 and 23551 with Cooper Lighting’s Lumiere Coronado 740 illumination. The 5-ft. 3-in.-tall, aluminum “Cinema” letters rest atop 11-ft.-tall poles. Their faces are painted with Matthews Paint’s MAP Silver 18074, while the interiors are painted with Dunn Edwards’ DE5865 semi-gloss. The letters feature Cooper Lighting’s Lumiere Cambria 203 illumination.

THIRD PLACE

This double-faced, 14 x 10-ft. pole sign features a cedar tongue-and-groove background. The lettering and graphics are handcarved HDU. Goldleaf adorns “Huron,” “Mountain” and “Bakery.” The latter includes a black smalt background. The 11-ft.-long, 18-in.-diameter rolling pin is a concrete-formed tube with HDU ends. The Adaptive Micro Systems Inc.’ EMC measures 20 x 88 in.
