Portland, OR’s Meyer Sign Co. recently donated a sign to Portland’s Metro Habitat for Humanity ReStore, which sells used building materials and home-improvement products, in Beaverton, OR. Mary Mayer, who owns the shop with her husband, Dennis, said fabricating the sign for such a worthy charity was a labor of love.
“It would be one thing to just write a check as a business owner,” she said. “But, we’ve had team building days where we’ve assisted Habitat with projects, and it’s been enjoyable for our whole crew.”
The 30-sq.-ft. sign, which is illuminated with Sloan LED white modules sheathed with a ½-in.-thick, acrylic face, draws only 4W/sq.ft of electricity and earned UL’s “green leaf” energy-efficiency certification. In addition to promoting good corporate citizenship through the donation of a sign valued at $8,000, it also underscores the 32-year-old company’s mission to produce “green” signage.
"This year, California began enforcing Title 24 [energy efficiency requirements], and that’s impacted sign companies there,” Meyer said. “Energy efficiency is a big trend in Oregon, and we want to be out in front of it rather than catching up when ‘green’ certification becomes the widespread norm.”
Meyer Signs also fabricated the state’s first internally illuminated, solar signs for Salem’s (OR) Renewable Energy Park.
