The American Theater (Charleston, SC) opened on Sept. 19, 1942 with an Art Deco design intended to emulate Hollywood’s Golden Era. Named in honor of US servicemembers, The American closed in 1977. However, the theater was granted new life in 1996 when Charles and Celeste Patrick of Patrick Properties purchased the property and commissioned a restoration. Today, The American is an 8,000-sq.-ft. event venue that retains many of its original charms, including this marquee.
