To spotlight the new JE Dunn corporate headquarters in Kansas City, MO, Star Signs LLC (Lawrence, KS) cleverly cut 2-, 4-, 6- and 8-ft. lengths of 12mm Sloan ColorLINE border tubing to create the “pixie stick” lighting effect and also light the remainder of the sign. The LED tubes, powered by four Sloan #701507/MOD 277V power supplies, were mounted to an aluminium panel within the 26-in.-high x 16-ft.-wide, aluminum sign cabinet, then spaced at varying distances from the 3/16-in.-thick clear, polycarbonate sign face with aluminum angle spacers. The same pattern was duplicated for each side of the sign.
White translucent vinyl was applied to the first surface of the polycarbonate, and the translucent blue vinyl was removed from behind the logo so that the graphics appear white.
Because the sign sits within a poured-in-place concrete planter, Star Signs worked closely with the general contractor to ensure correct placement of the aluminum uprights and base plates before the sign cabinet was fabricated with Signcomp aluminum-extrusion kit components. A custom aluminum shroud, painted with Matthews metallic brushed silver to match the sign cabinet, fills the open space between the sign cabinet and the dirt in the planter.
