The Brentwood (TN) City Commission has approved changes to restrictive sign codes which have been in place since the town was founded in 1974. In July 2016, the commission unanimously approved an ordinance clarifying rules governing usage of vehicular signage and temporary, “sandwich board” signs commonly used by restaurants and other merchants. For example, the city has limited the time periods during which it’s permissible to park vehicles adorned with vinyl wraps or other commercial signage which are viewable from streets or highways.
The regulators hope to prevent vehicle signage from being used for identification of permanent business locations. Additionally, as a measure to prevent blocking sidewalks, the city has specified that temporary “sandwich boards” must be placed within 2 ft. of the buildings to which they relate. The city has not, however, modified its strict regulation of permanent, commercial signs.
