Exciting Wimbleton Tourney Featured Barco Screens

The 2008 Wimbledon tennis tournament, in which Rafael Nadal toppled Roger Federer from his string of five straight men’s event titles, featured 10 of Barco’s (Kortirk, Belgium) full-color OLite 612 LED displays.

Creative Technology, a technology and LED-display supplier to the All England Club since the mid-‘90s, selected the displays to replace dot-matrix scoreboards on Centre Court and No.1 Court at the All England Lawn Tennis Championships. The displays allowed spectators to keep tabs on court scores and also see replays, statistics, player profiles and additional match information.

Last year, the Hawk-Eye system and Barco’s OLite 612 LED screens were installed on No.1 Court to allow spectators to see the replays and judgment calls of the new electronic line-calling system.

In addition to four, on-court scoreboards, four IBM ball-speed indicators were upgraded using the same full-color OLite 612 LED panels. The traditional IBM “Match Information Displays” outside Centre Court and in the newly redesigned Tea Lawn Area, which overlook the new Centre Court balconies, also used the Barco OLite panels.

The Barco OLite 612 LED display is a multi-purpose display suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. With a 12mm-pixel pitch, 6,000-nit light output and 15-bit processing, the OLite 612 delivers a high-quality image. The use of SMD technology enables wide viewing angles and superb uniformity at short viewing distances. Its outdoor IP65 rating means the OLite panels can be used in all weather conditions.
