Fuel Miami Donates 600 Solar-Powered Bus Shelters

OOH media company Fuel Miami LLC continues to push its solar initiatives as it builds 600 bus shelters, which it donated to Miami, FL. As part of the fifth-largest outdoor company in the United States, Fuel Miami integrates solar panels into outdoor advertising to minimize environmental impact. The company says each of the solar-panel-fueled displays, which will be built over a three-year period, will prevent the emission of two tons of carbon into the atmosphere.

Michael Freedman, CEO of Fuel Outdoor Holdings LLC (NYC), Fuel’s parent, said Fuel has donated the bus shelters to ensure clean illumination and security for nighttime passengers, while eliminating potential negative environmental impact.

Miami Mayor Manny Diaz explained, “Thanks to a successful public-private partnership, what we have with Fuel Miami is a revolutionary model at work – corporate advertising dollars are being used to clean the environment.”

“As outdoor advertisers, we are sensitive to the quality and appearance of the city’s environment,” Freedman said. “In the case of our Miami bus shelters, we felt it was necessary to ensure that our advertisements could provide benefits to not only our clients, but also the city.”

In 2007, Miami City Commission approved Fuel as a long-term provider of bus shelters, benches and trash receptacles. The city agreed that Fuel Miami would exclusively supply the city with outdoor furniture for the next 20 years. The new shelters will have benches, roofs and adequate materials, including trash receptacles.

Only 100 shelters will have advertising. Four sizes of shelter will be available including standard and slim, and long and short versions.

Fuel, which has more than 4,000 locations in eight of the top 15 U.S. markets, has partnered with other landlords and municipalities to address the creative needs of advertisers and agencies with high-impact media.
