Iconic Sign Goes Missing from Shop’s Storage

When the vintage Michelle’s ice cream shop sign in downtown Colorado Springs was removed last year, the plan was to restore it to its former glory.

Those plans are on hold now, as the local artifact is now missing from the signshop that was storing it, The Downtown Partnership of Colorado Springs announced.

The sign, which weighs several hundred pounds, had belonged to an ice cream and confectionery business that opened in the 1950s. Though financial problems forced its closure in 2007, the sign remained in its longtime location for the next 15 years, KOAA News5 writes.

According to the Downtown Partnership, the sign is believed to have gone missing in November 2022 and is “rusted with broken bulbs and in poor condition overall.”

“The Downtown Development Authority (DDA) had been working in partnership with the owner of the building, who also owns the sign, to explore restoration of the sign for re-installment elsewhere in downtown for all the community to enjoy,” says Susan Edmondson, president and CEO of the Downtown Partnership. “It’s a shame that it disappeared before that had a chance to happen.”

Leads in the investigation of what happened to the sign have dried up, according to the news station. A reward of $1,000 is now being offered to anyone who can furnish information that leads to the sign’s recovery prior to April 30.
