In Memoriam: Harold A. Balton Jr.

Harold Arthur Balton Jr., of Lakeland, TN, passed away September 10, 2009. He was 75. Harold was born in
Memphis. He graduated from CBC High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. When he returned to Memphis, he worked at Balton & Sons Signs. In 1960, he founded H. A. Balton Sign Co. and operated it until his retirement in 2000.
Harold, who helped many sign professionals get their start, was a “fourth-generation sign man,” as described by his son Mark, who has carried on the family tradition in the sign business.
Frequently seen on the links, Harold was well-known as a “scratch” golfer.
Harold is survived by sons Mark, Drew and Brandt Balton; daughter Lisa Altizer; sisters Theresa Balton and Rosemary Berry; and five grandchildren. Harold and his wife, Judy, hosted may Cub and Boy Scout functions at the family farm, and memorials can be sent to the Chickasaw Council Boy Scouts of America in Memphis, TN, where his son Mark and grandson Patrick were Eagle Scouts.
