THE JUNE 1966 cover of Signs of the Times — just the second in CMYK — featured neon in modern art. “The medium has gained surprising national attention in major weekly news magazines,” the 1966 cover story states. “That subject, a couple of articles and a few ads in the issue take me back to my ST origins running our Book Division starting in 1993. The first project I was assigned was The Light Artist Anthology by Christian Schiess — featuring neon and other lighting in modern art.” — Mark Kissling. ST Books began decades before this issue and by 1966 included these classics: Practical Sign Shop Operation by Bob Fitzgerald, Gold Leaf Techniques by Raymond J. LeBlanc, Better Sign Painting by Ralph Gregory, Neon Signs by Samuel Miller and The Book of 100 Type Face Alphabets by J.I. Biegeleisen. Later editions of all of these books were still for sale when I started in 1993. — M.K.
