Samsung Introduces 2,000-nit, 70-in. LCD Outdoor Display

Samsung Semiconductor Inc. Electronics Co. Ltd. (NYC), the world’s largest provider of thin-film transistor, liquid crystal displays (TFT-LCDs), is announcing it has developed a 70-in. diagonal, “super bright” LCD digital-signage panel, which the company claims is the brightest panel to be mass produced. It’s designed to optimally accommodate the wide range of outdoor-lighting conditions in such locations as transit centers, museums and for the outside of retail centers, to replace less noticeable poster advertisements.

The 2,000-nit LCD panel is one-third brighter than the previous brightest digital information display (1,500 nit) and has been designed to optimally accommodate the tremendous range of lighting conditions affecting outdoor displays.

The display will be available for use in digital signs for transit centers, bus shelters, museums and for the outside of retail centers, to replace less noticeable poster advertisements.

Using local dimming LED technology, Samsung’s “super bright” LCD panel mitigates its added power consumption by continually adjusting picture brightness in precise “localized” increments, thereby avoiding having to brighten areas that don’t require brightening. Local dimming technology permits the new panel to increase its dynamic contrast ratio up to 200,000:1.

The 70-in. “super bright” display provides a Full-HD (1,080p) screen resolution with 16.7 million colors. It also provides a 178° viewing angle. Weighing only 80 kilograms, the panel is 1,630mm wide x 952mm high x 129.6mm deep, and can be used in either a portrait or landscape format.

Besides being used for advertising, the display panel can serve as a public communication device to provide visually enhanced emergency messaging, directions, maps or visitor information.
