Scan Dimension Unveils SOL, a New 3D Scanner

Scan Dimension (Chantilly, VA) announced the release of SOL, a 3D scanner for the everyday maker, technology enthusiast and hobbyist. SOL is an accurate, portable and affordable 3D scanner that creates detailed, precise 3D models of scanned objects, according to the company. The SOL viewer application allows users to export and share the model in many standard formats.

SOL provides significant value for 3D technology enthusiasts. It eliminates three important hurdles to 3D scanning: complex calibration, time-consuming software manipulation, and manual mesh alignment. To start a scan, users simply place an object on a turntable, cover it with the included tent and press a button – the laser, camera, and software do the rest.

SOL features near- and far-mode scanning, and supports the following dimensions and maximum weight:

  • For near-mode scanning, an object up to 100 mm in diameter and 100 mm tall (3.9 x 3.9 in.).
  • For far-mode scanning, an object up to 170 mm in diameter and 170 mm tall (6.69 x 6.69 in.).
  • Maximum scannable weight is 2 kg (4.4 lbs. or 70.5 oz.).
